3 Things You Need To Know About Acne Agminata

While acne is often thought of as a single condition, there are actually many different types of acne. A severe type of acne is acne agminata, also known as lupus miliaris disseminatus faciei. Here are three things you need to know about acne agminata.

What are the signs of acne agminata?

Acne agminata usually appears within the eyebrows, but other areas of the face, like the cheeks or temples, may also be affected. It's possible for this type of acne to form on your trunk or other areas, but this isn't common.

This type of acne presents as brown papules with yellow centers. These papules are discrete, meaning that they remain separate instead of developing in closely-packed clusters. The papules generally last for several months. At first, they fill with pus, then they become crusty, then finally, they heal and leave a scar.

It's easy to mistake acne agminata for acne vulgaris, the latter being the standard type of acne. The main difference is that people with acne vulgaris have comedones (blackheads or whiteheads) in addition to papules, while people with acne agminata only have papules.

What causes acne agminata?

The cause of acne agminata is still unclear. It's believed to be a type of rosacea, a skin disease that leads to acne-like breakouts. Some researchers believe that it may be a tuberculid, meaning that it's associated with latent tuberculosis infection. Your doctor may perform a tuberculosis test to rule out this possibility. Others think that it's an inflammatory condition, just like other types of acne. More research is needed to determine which theory is correct.

How is acne agminata treated?

There are a number of treatments available for acne agminata. Prednisone, a type of steroid, can be used to control the inflammation. Dapsone, a type of antibiotic, can also be given systemically to control this type of acne. Isotretinoin, a medication that's used to treat severe types of acne, can also be helpful. Some types of medications, like malaria medications, can be used off-label as a treatment for acne agminata.

Severe scarring can result from acne agminata, so once your papules have cleared up, you may require treatment for these scars. Cosmetic skin treatments like dermabrasion or chemical peels can be used to restore the look of your skin.

If you have brown papules with yellow centers on your face, you may have acne agminata and should see your doctor for treatment.
